PICHIAVO - PERSEUS AND MEDUSA DIASPASIS B

PichiAvo artwork Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis B is a one-of-a-kind piece made with spray paint, acrylic, and oil on plasterboard in 2023. 

The work is part of the Diaspasis series, in Greek separation; these works evoke the fragments of a wall on which an anthropomorphic subject was depicted, only the remains of which can now be seen. Greco-Roman mythology is central to the Pichiavo artists' works-in this work, in fact, the head of Medusa, a serpent-haired gorgon, severed by the hero Perseus thanks to Hades' helmet that makes him invisible and the use of a shield that allows him not to meet her petrifying gaze. 

Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis B was part of a larger plasterboard panel, painted and then broken up by the artists to go to create more independent works of art. In fact, the corners are fragmented and resemble the materiality a wall. Juxtaposing it with Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis A you will notice a continuity in the design.

Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis B was executed by the PichiAvo artists with an innovative technique, called precisely Diaspasis, which lies between painting and sculpture. The artists, world-famous for their murals, bring the materiality of outdoor works into the gallery with their Diaspasis series. The street artist painting figures and details on plasterboard boards that are then broken up, leaving the corners uneven. The effect these works restore is that of archaeological finds, fragments of a single design found and again separated in the halls of distant museums.

For the subjects of their works PichiAvo are inspired by Greek and Roman statues that they have seen and photographed during their travels around the world. These sculptures are reinterpreted and redrawn through their iconic style that combines Classical Art, graffiti, tags, and different uses of spray cans.

Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis B measures 60 x 80 cm and weighs 5 kg.
