PICHIAVO - PERSEUS AND MEDUSA DIASPASIS A

PichiAvo artwork Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis A is a one-of-a-kind piece made with spray paint, acrylic, and oil on plasterboard in 2023. 

The work is part of the Diaspasis series, in Greek separation; these works evoke the fragments of a wall on which an anthropomorphic subject was depicted, only the remains of which can now be seen. Greco-Roman mythology is central to the works of the Pichiavo artists in this work, in fact,Perseus is depicted wearing the helmet of Hades that makes the hero invisible.  

Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis A was part of a larger plasterboard panel, painted and then broken up by the artists to go to create more autonomous works of art. In fact, the corners are fragmented and resemble the fragments of a wall. Juxtaposing it with Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis B, one will notice a continuity in the design. The works refer to the famous episode of the killing of Medusa, a snake-haired gorgon capable of petrifying enemies with her own gaze.

Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis A was executed by the PichiAvo artists with an innovative technique, called precisely Diaspasis, which lies between painting and sculpture. The artists, world-famous for their murals, bring the materiality of outdoor works into the gallery with their Diaspasis, painting figures and details on plasterboard boards that are then broken up, leaving the irregular corners.

For the subjects of their artworks PichiAvo are inspired by Greek and Roman statues that they have seen and photographed during their travels around the world. These sculptures are reinterpreted and redrawn thanks to their iconic style that combines Classical Art, graffiti, tags, and lettering from the street repertoire. In fact, in this work in which the words "Old School" can be read.

Perseus and Medusa Diaspasis A measures 98 x 100 cm and weighs 13 kg.
