PICHIAVO – HYLAS AND THE NAIADES DIASPASIS A

The work of PichiAvo Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis A is a unique piece made with spray paint, acrylic and oil on plasterboard in 2023.

The work is part of the series Diaspasis, in Greek separation; these works evoke fragments of a wall on which a larger subject was depicted, of which only the remains can now be seen. Among the recurring subjects of Pichiavo artists are the protagonists of Greek mythology. In this fragment are represented a nymph, specifically a Naiad, water nymph, and Ila, a demigod famous for its beauty.

As you can guess from the edges of the work and the looks of the figures, Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis A, was part of a larger plasterboard panel, painted and then broken by the artists, creating more fragments and individual works. Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis B and Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis C. The myth tells that Ila had embarked with the Argonauts at the behest of Heracles; during the journey, in a stop looking for a spring of fresh water, Ila came across the Naiads who, shocked by his beauty, they kidnapped him. There was no trace of him.

Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis A was performed by PichiAvo artists with an innovative technique, called Diaspasis, which is placed between painting and sculpture. The artists, famous all over the world for their murals, with the series Diaspasis bring inside the gallery the materiality of the outdoor works, painting figures and details on plasterboard boards that are then broken, leaving the irregular corners. The effect of these works is that of archaeological finds, fragments of a single design found and again separated in the halls of distant museums.

For the subjects of their works PichiAvo are inspired by Greek and Roman statues that have seen and photographed during their travels around the world. These sculptures are reinterpreted and redesigned thanks to their iconic style that combines classical art and graffiti, with tags on the background and bright and intense colors. In this work the palette is in pink and blue tones.

Hylas and the Naiades Diaspasis A measures 104 x 120 cm and weighs 14 kg.
