PICHIAVO – DIONYSUS AND ARIADNE B

The work of PichiAvo Dionysus and Ariadne B is a unique piece made with spray paint, acrylic and oil on plasterboard in 2023.

The work is part of the series Diaspasis, in Greek separation; these works evoke fragments of a wall on which one or more subjects were depicted, of which only the remains can now be seen. In this fragment is represented Arianna, creator of the famous thread trap in the labyrinth of the Minotaur and bride of the god of wine Dionysus, on a chariot pulled by two panthers.

Dionysus and Ariadne B was part of a larger plasterboard panel, painted and then broken by artists, creating two autonomous works. The other figure next to Arianna, Dionysus, is in fact present in the work Dionysus and Ariadne A. The whole work refers to the marriage between Bacchus and Ariadne, abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos, is found by the Greek god who asks her in marriage.

Dionysus and Ariadne B was performed by PichiAvo artists with an innovative technique, called Diaspasis, which is placed between painting and sculpture. The artists, famous all over the world for their murals, with the series Diaspasis bring inside the gallery the materiality of the outdoor works, painting figures and details on plasterboard boards that are then broken, leaving the irregular corners. The effect of these works is that of archaeological finds, fragments of a single design found and again separated in the halls of distant museums.

For the subjects of their works PichiAvo are inspired by Greek and Roman statues that have seen and photographed during their travels around the world. These sculptures are reinterpreted and redesigned thanks to their iconic style that combines classical art and graffiti, with tags on the background and bright and intense colors. In this work the palette is in shades of blue and fuchsia.

Dionysus and Ariadne B measures 94 x 118 cm and weighs 13 kg.
