Archibald Delicate Balance: when Obey’s street art meets the excellence of Poltrona Frau

In an increasingly fluid landscape of collaborations between contemporary art and design, the Archibald “Delicate Balance” Limited Edition project represents a particularly meaningful point of convergence. On one side, the iconic and radical identity of Shepard Fairey—globally known as Obey—on the other, the artisanal tradition and timeless elegance of Poltrona Frau. The result is a work that transcends the dimension of a design object to enter the realm of cultural narrative.

This limited edition will be presented during Milan Design Week 2026, scheduled from April 13 to April 26, and is part of the brand’s 2026 collection theme, “True Over Time” , a concept that reflects on what remains authentic and relevant despite the passage of time. In this context, the collaboration with Fairey is not merely aesthetic, but deeply conceptual.

A visual language between activism and symbolism

Shepard Fairey is one of the most influential figures in contemporary street art, capable of transforming urban imagery into a tool for political and social reflection. His practice is rooted in a highly recognizable iconographic system, built through symbolic layering and direct messaging.

In the Delicate Balance project, this language translates into a complex and poetic visual composition: a female figure—an allegory of Mother Nature—interacts with natural elements such as birds and flowers, evoking the cycles of life and the fragility of environmental balance. This is not mere decoration, but a true “visual meditation” on the relationship between human beings and nature.

Here, Fairey reworks some of his most emblematic images, transforming them into a new narrative: fragments of visual memory that, once recomposed, generate an original story about humanity, nature, and the future.

The armchair as a narrative surface

Designed in 2009 by Jean-Marie Massaud, the Archibald armchair is already an icon of contemporary design. With Delicate Balance, it is reinterpreted as an expressive surface—a three-dimensional support for art.

Fairey’s intervention does not alter the structure of the object but redefines its meaning: the armchair becomes a cultural statement, a bridge between street art and high-end craftsmanship. It is within this tension between function and symbolism that the project finds its strength.

Craftsmanship and innovation: a new skin

A key aspect of the project lies in its material research. The armchair is upholstered in Pelle Frau® ColorSphere Impact Less, processed through a more sustainable and innovative tanning method.

Fairey’s illustration is applied through advanced digital printing, with layered colors and 3D embossing that enhance depth and dimensionality. This approach marks a further step in Poltrona Frau’s experimentation, where craftsmanship continuously engages with technology.

A project between aesthetics and responsibility

The collaboration also includes a tangible social impact: for every armchair sold, two trees are planted in Guatemala, supporting a local community of women.

This element reinforces the overall meaning of the project, which moves between aesthetics, ethics, and environmental awareness.

A limited edition as a work of art

Produced in only 200 numbered pieces, each armchair takes on the status of a collector’s item through the details that accompany it: a polished brass plaque, a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist and the CEO of Poltrona Frau, and a dedicated clutch that echoes the narrative of the artwork.
