Made by Shepard Fairey (Obey), Commanda is a silkscreen on paper measuring 76 x 104 cm. This artwork belongs to a limited edition of 19 pieces, is completed by hand and signed in original by the artist.
The title derives from the union of the name of Shepard Fairey’s wife, Amanda portrayed in the work, and the word “command”: a provocation that is often present in his works. Shepard Fairey, in fact, chooses Obey – in English “to obey” – as his art name precisely because he aims to challenge the viewer. Using verbs as “command” and “obey” the artist wants to communicate the opposite message inviting to critical sense and a disobedient behaviour.
The protagonist Amanda also contributes to overturn the stereotypes of female portrayal: an independent and resourceful woman.
The artist Shepard Fairey inserts the symbol that made him famous under the stage name Obey in several places on the silkscreen: André the Giant inscribed in a star and surrounded by petals of a stylized flower.
