PURE EVIL – YELLOW MARLENE DALÌ

Pure Evil Yellow Marlene Dali's work, created on laser-cut multilayer perspex, depicts German actress and singer Marie Magdalene Dietrich: a true icon of cinema in the first half of the 20th century.

Unlike the other famous protagonists of his Nightmare series, Marlene's face does not have the series' characteristic tear streaming down it and, moreover, the subject reserves a proud gaze for the viewer.

As in numerous of his other works, Pure Evil attempts to highlight the more human and truthful side of his subjects, the one that often remains hidden by fame. The actress in The Blue Angel, despite her strong emotional ties to her homeland, was always opposed to Nazism and the Third Reich, so much so that she renounced her German citizenship to obtain American citizenship in 1937.

In this work, measuring 100x100x4 cm, Pure Evil provocatively inserts a mustache on Marlene's face, harking back to Salvador Dali's iconic one.

The artist Pure Evil presented the work on the occasion of the solo exhibition Not my circus, not my monkeys held in September 2022 at Wunderkammern's Milan location.
