The work The Lost Reign II is an acrylic and Bic pen on paper created by the street artist Microbo in 2022.

In the centre of this work of small dimensions (21.5 x 21.5 x 4 cm), the artist depicts a round microbe with a hole in the middle and made up of numerous blue bubbles of different sizes. The precise and meticulous rendering of the subject reveals the artist's technical skill. Microbo has been fascinated by the microcosm since the beginning of her career, so much so that she studied microbiology and chose 'Microbo' as her stage name. If at first the Sicilian urban artist approaches these 'invisible' kingdoms with scientific interest, at a later stage painting microbes introduces a more philosophical and creative element using fantasy and imagination.

Microbe uses different techniques and materials to create his works, taking inspiration from ancient religions, history, myths and philosophies.

The Lost Reign I was exhibited during the Expanded FunToMentalism exhibition that the Wunderkammern gallery in Milan dedicated to Microbo and Bo130, a Milanese street artist with whom the artist has been working for over twenty years.

MICROBO

Microbo, the pseudonym of an Italian artist born in Catania in 1970, is recognised as one of the few female pioneers of international street art. She currently lives and works in Milan, calling herself a ‘citizen of planet Earth and microbe of the universe’.

Training and Career Start

Her artistic training began within the historical editorial staff of ‘Lapis’, a publication that contributed to the cultural rebirth of Catania in the early 1990s. Later, she moved to London, where she met the artist Bo130. Together, they formed an artistic and sentimental partnership that continues to this day.

Return to Italy and Contribution to Street Art

In 2000, Microbo and Bo130 returned to Italy, settling in Milan. Here, they became reference points for the new underground current of Street Art worldwide. Microbo was also a member of the Italian art collective SunWuKung, which is known for its performances throughout Italy and has also received recognition in Europe.

Curatorship and Significant Events

Starting in 2002, together with Bo130, Microbo curated the first urban art events in Italy, bringing together different generations of graffiti writers in group exhibitions. Among these events are ‘Arteimpropria’ in 2003 and the ‘Urban Edge Show’ in 2005, considered key moments in the history of international street art.

Art Style and Themes

Microbo's art is deeply influenced by the microcosm. He uses an ancestral organic alphabet composed of creatures and filaments floating in a timeless space, evoking the dawn of life and the interconnectedness of all things. His works, made with different techniques and materials, tell stories, myths and legends that invite the viewer to reflect on their soul.

Relevant Exhibitions and Publications

Microbo has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in unconventional venues and prestigious international museums. Notable exhibitions include:

‘Nusign 2.4’ (2004) at the ArtCore Space in Paris, one of the first Street Art exhibitions in Europe.

‘Wooster on Spring’ (2006) in New York, organised by the founders of the “Wooster Collective”.

‘Cross The Streets’ (2017) at the MACRO in Rome.

His works can be found in private and public art collections in Europe and the USA. In 2005, together with Bo130 and Matteo Donini, he published ‘Izastikup’, a collection dedicated to sticker culture.

Microbo continues to influence the contemporary art scene with his unique vision and commitment to the promotion of Street Art as a legitimate and meaningful art form.
