John Andrew Perello, known as JonOne, was born in 1963 in New York to parents of Dominican descent. He grew up in the vibrant Harlem neighbourhood, where, at the age of 17, he began to express his creativity through graffiti, signing himself with the tag ‘Jon156’.
In 1984, he founded the ‘156 All Starz’ crew, becoming a prominent figure in the New York graffiti scene.
In 1987, JonOne decided to move to Paris, a city that would become his new home and the centre of his international artistic career.
Evolution of Style: From Street to Canvas
JonOne's style is a unique fusion of graffiti and abstract expressionism. His works combine calligraphy, colour and paint matter, creating dynamic compositions that cover the entire surface of the canvas.
Inspired by the energy and movement of urban life, JonOne uses interwoven lines and vivid colours to convey vitality and dynamism, making his creations instantly recognisable.
Collaborations and Exhibitions
Throughout his career, JonOne has collaborated with numerous internationally renowned brands, including Guerlain, Air France, Lacoste and Perrier, bringing his art into commercial contexts and expanding his audience.
He has exhibited his works in prestigious institutions and galleries, participating in group exhibitions such as ‘Born in the Streets - Graffiti’ at the Fondation Cartier and ‘Le Tag Collection Gallizia’ at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2009.
Official Recognition: The Legion of Honour
On 1 January 2015, JonOne was awarded the Legion of Honour by the French Republic, an honour that celebrates his contribution to art and culture.
On the occasion of this honour, he created the work ‘Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité’, a modern reinterpretation of the allegory of the French Republic, inspired by Eugène Delacroix's famous painting ‘Liberty Leading the People’.
This work was inaugurated at the Palais Bourbon, seat of the French National Assembly, and represents a symbol of republican values through contemporary art.
Exhibitions in Italy: The Link with Wunderkammern
JonOne has developed a strong connection with Italy, collaborating with the Wunderkammern gallery for several exhibitions.
In 2016, he presented his first solo exhibition at the gallery's Milan venue, followed by the exhibition ‘Niente può fermarmi’ in 2018 in Rome, hosted in the prestigious setting of Palazzo Velli in Trastevere.
These exhibitions consolidated his presence in the Italian art scene and allowed the public to appreciate his stylistic evolution up close.
