In Anonymous XIV, Sten Lex return to their iconic series of anonymous portraits, presenting a serious male figure in formal attire, rendered through their signature stencil poster technique. The subject is built from dense concentric black lines on a white background, which, from a distance, clearly define the face, but dissolve into abstraction up close. The image appears partially deteriorated: tears, cuts, and long paper filaments hang from the lower edge of the piece, remnants of a deliberately incomplete process.
The work is the result of the duo’s unique method: a paper poster is affixed to a wooden panel, manually cut, painted, and finally “destroyed,” with the remaining scraps becoming part of the final image. What remains is a fragile, imperfect portrait marked by time and the artist’s gesture.
Anonymous XIV reflects on identity and memory: the subject is unknown, yet portrayed with the formality of an official portrait, as if from an old document or forgotten archive. The deconstruction of the face and the material presence of the hanging scraps transform the image into something alive and unstable, slowly disintegrating before the viewer. This tension between structure and decay is a hallmark of Sten Lex’s visual language.
Created in 2025, the artwork measures 100x70 cm and is made with stencil poster on wood. Each piece is unique, as the destruction of the matrix prevents any reproduction.
