The hand in the center of the composition is caught in the act of offering the observer a can of black paint, which refers to oil and the negative consequences that the latter brings to the environment. The title "Paint It Black" also recalls a 1966 song by the Rolling Stones, which tells of the depression caused by the death of a loved one, in which the whole world turns black.

Shepard Fairey, street artist known all over the world, was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1970. His artistic career began in 1989 with the sticker campaign 'André the Giant has a posse', during which he wallpapered the city of Providence with the face of wrestler André the Giant. Obey achieved international success in 2008 with his iconic portrait of Barack Obama, Hope, which became a true symbol of the American presidential campaign.
