SHEPARD FAIREY – ANGELA NUBIAN

The silk-screen print on paper by Shepard Fairey (Obey) Angela Nubian belongs to a limited edition of 19 specimens, is completed by hand, numbered and signed in the original by the artist.

In this work measuring 76 x 104 cm, as in most of his works, Shepard Fairey addresses issues that are politically and socially engaged.

The main subject of the work is Angela Davis: feminist and civil rights activist, especially black women who daily have to overcome the many prejudices related to ethnicity and gender. The activist of the African-American movement is known internationally thanks to her most important book "Women, Race and Class".

On the iconic afro hair of Angela Davis, Shepard Fairey inserts two key terms - "power" and "equality" - for which the protagonist has fought. The artist Shepard Fairey introduces some elements that convey a kind of ambiguity as the gaze that manages to convey both determination and calm.

Angela Nubian is part of the Brown Power series, which takes up the style of the Black Power movement and includes several portraits of African Americans who fought for freedom.
