MASITO - S7521-Q103

Masito's work S7521-Q103 is a watercolour on cotton paper produced in 2021. This work, originally signed by the Roman rapper, belongs to his well-known Sideralis series.

The Sideralis are fantastical creatures with anthropomorphic features created by the artist Masito from the reworking of his tag Iems, with which he identified himself when painting graffiti.

In this 23 x 31 cm work, Deep Masito depicts his iconic character using a muted colour palette on a white background.

Masito exhibited these works on the occasion of the double solo exhibition dedicated to him and the rapper Esa - Characters - held at the Wunderkammern gallery in Rome. The exhibition gave rise to a real dialogue between the two artists, in which the focus was more on the differences that characterise the production of each rather than on similarities. Masito's Sideralis, in fact, appear neat and tidy, while Esa's Faces convey a feeling of chaos to the viewer.

MASITO

Massimiliano Piluzzi, known as Masito, is a multifaceted artist born in Rome in 1975. Also known by the pseudonyms Beffa, Masito Fresco or Deep Masito, he has managed to combine his passion for rap music with that for the visual arts, establishing himself both as a rapper and as a writer, graphic designer and calligrapher.

His beginnings in writing and his success on the Roman scene

At the end of the 1980s, Masito began his activity as a writer under the name Iems or Iem. He participated in several crews in the capital, including GRA, FCP and the famous mega-crew Rome Zoo, actively contributing to the development of the graffiti scene in Rome.

Musical career with Colle der Fomento

In the early 1990s, Masito co-founded the rap group Colle der Fomento with Simone Eleuteri, aka Danno. The group released four albums: ‘Odio Pieno’, ‘Scienza doppia H’, ‘Anima e Ghiaccio’ and ‘Adversus’. The group's music, characterised by deep lyrics and hardcore sounds, influenced a generation of fans and artists in the Italian hip hop scene.

The artistic evolution: from graphics to calligraphy

Parallel to his musical career, Masito developed skills in the field of graphics, producing event posters and record covers for his band and other Roman artists such as Il Turco, Supremo 73 and Truce Boys. Towards the end of the 1990s, he began to explore the world of calligraphy, initially self-taught and later through specific training courses. This passion led him to obtain numerous commissions, including designing the logo for the radio show ‘Welcome 2 the Jungle’ in 2016.

Painting on canvas and technical experiments

Since 2000, Masito has been painting on canvas using acrylic paints and representing subjects ranging from lettering to figurative. He experiments with different techniques and media, such as oil on canvas, watercolour on paper, collage and stencil. His works are exhibited at live music events in the capital, highlighting his ability to merge music and visual arts into a single creative expression.

Collaborations and special projects

In 2013 and 2015, on the occasion of the ‘Battle of the Year Italy’, Masito customised two limited edition watches with Casio G-Shock. In 2017, he created the lettering for the poster of the ‘Cross The Street’ exhibition at the Macro contemporary art museum in Rome, consolidating his presence in the contemporary art scene.

Recent exhibitions and awards

In 2022, Masito participated in the exhibition ‘Characters’ at the Wunderkammern gallery in Rome, together with the artist Esa. The exhibition highlights the versatility of the two artists, highlighting how hip hop culture can also be expressed through graphic art and painting.

Masito represents an emblematic figure of Italian hip hop culture, successfully integrating rap music and visual arts. His continuous artistic research and ability to reinvent himself make him a reference point for new generations of artists and fans.
