Whispers of Nature

Orticanoodles is the artistic name of the duo composed of Italian artists Wally and Alita, originally from Carrara and Milan respectively. The two met in the late 1990s during their studies at the IED – Istituto Europeo di Design – in Milan. It was during this period that they developed a shared interest in stencil art, which would become the central expressive medium of their work. Their artistic partnership took shape in the early 2000s within Milan’s emerging street art scene and became firmly established in 2004 with their involvement in the TSO crew, alongside the artist Zibe.

The name Orticanoodles refers to the Ortica district of Milan, where the duo set up their studio, and symbolically evokes the proliferating and spontaneous nature of their art.

Artistic Poetics and Style

Orticanoodles’ style is deeply rooted in pop visual culture and is characterized by a sophisticated use of stencil, through which the duo creates portraits of historical figures, iconic personalities, and symbols of contemporary culture.

Their stencils are designed with great precision, and the color application ranges from spray paint to brushwork, ensuring a layered and distinctive chromatic effect.

From the outset, their imagery has been populated with recurring symbols such as the timeless face inspired by Christ, the frog, the thorny heart, and the fork with stinging noodles—images that have become true emblems of their production.

Attention to the urban environment and integration with the surrounding space are central to their poetics: each work is conceived to engage with public space and foster collective reflection. Orticanoodles has made street art a tool for urban regeneration and social inclusion, also through numerous participatory art projects that actively involve local communities.

Exhibitions and International Projects

Orticanoodles is recognized as one of the first Italian stencil art collectives to gain international acclaim.

In 2008, they took part in the renowned Cans Festival in London, curated by Banksy, where they created Freedom, a monumental 4x3 meter stencil inside the Waterloo Station tunnel. That same year, they participated in Stencil History X, an exhibition bringing together leading international stencil artists.

The duo exhibits regularly abroad, representing Italian street art in prominent museum and gallery contexts. Key milestones in their career include their participation in the Tour-Paris 13 project, regarded as a landmark event in urban art.

Public Projects

Beyond gallery and festival work, Orticanoodles has created over 100 public art interventions in Italy and abroad.

Of particular importance is the project OR.ME – Ortica Memoria, launched in 2015 in Milan’s Ortica district: a cycle of twenty murals dedicated to collective memory and to key figures of 20th-century Italian history, realized in collaboration with local residents. The initiative, still expanding, stands as an emblematic example of the collective’s participatory and socially engaged vocation.
