Dan Witz, born in Chicago in 1957, is an American artist recognised as one of the pioneers of the street art movement.
He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Training and early years
Witz undertook his art training at the Rhode Island School of Design between 1975 and 1977. Later, in 1980, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cooper Union in New York.
Influenced by punk culture, he began his art career in 1979, quickly emerging as a leading figure in urban art.
Artistic Style and Approach
At the beginning of his career, Witz focused on pictorial hyperrealism. Over time, he developed urban installations characterised by their rapid realisation times.
He often uses digital images on which he intervenes pictorially to obtain light contrasts that enhance the realism of the figures depicted.
His works address social, political and economic issues, transforming urban spaces into meeting places for collective and individual experiences.
Acknowledgements and awards
Throughout his career, Witz has received numerous awards, including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1983 and fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 1992 and 2000.
Significant exhibitions and collaborations
Witz has exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. In 2017, he collaborated with Dior Homme for their autumn/winter collection, where his hyper-realistic paintings were printed on various garments.
Other recent projects include ‘Project M/6’ with Urban Nation in Berlin in 2014 and a collaboration with Amnesty International in Frankfurt in 2012.
Dan Witz continues to influence the urban art scene with his ability to fuse traditional painting techniques and innovative urban interventions, offering a profound reflection on contemporary society.
