Romance 2020 HPM - No Smile

Dean Stockton, known to the world as D*Face, was born in London in 1978. Growing up in the British capital, he developed a deep passion for drawing from an early age.

At the age of 15, his interest in street art was stimulated by reading Henry Chalfant's ‘Spraycan and Subway Art’ and Thrasher magazine's articles on skateboard graphics.

These influences, combined with the culture of skateboarding, hip hop, punk and rock music, shaped his artistic vision. 

Professional Career and Collaborations

Before devoting himself fully to art, D*Face worked as a freelance illustrator and designer. In 2004, he started printing his own graphics on banknotes, spreading them to integrate his style into the collective imagination.

This attracted the attention of Banksy, with whom he collaborated to produce a limited series of prints that quickly sold out.

In 2005, he participated in the fourth edition of ‘Santa's Ghetto’ together with artists such as Banksy, Invader, Ben Eine and Paul Insect, a travelling group exhibition aimed at challenging the logic of the market and making art accessible. 

The ‘aPOPcalyptic’ Style and Artistic Techniques

D*Face describes his style as ‘aPOPcalyptic’, a fusion of pop aesthetics and a critique of contemporary society dominated by materialism and the pursuit of fame.

Inspired by artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as by the language of advertising and the universe of comics, he creates dysfunctional characters that challenge the stereotypical images of today's society.

His works range from stickers and posters to large murals in cities such as London, Paris, Madrid, Miami, Mexico City, Dubai and Taipei. A distinctive technique is HPM (Hand Painted Multiples), which combine manual application of colour with screen printing, making each piece unique. 

International Exhibitions and Awards

D*Face's first solo exhibition, ‘Death & Glory’, was held in 2006, marking the beginning of a series of exhibitions in galleries around the world.

In 2023, the Wunderkammern gallery in Milan hosted ‘Silver Screen Eye-Cons’, an exhibition exploring the relationship between D*Face's art and cinema.

The exhibition included works depicting his iconic Peanuts-inspired character D*Dog and tributes to Italian cinema through interventions on famous film posters. 

Cultural Impact and Musical Collaborations

In addition to the visual arts, D*Face has extended his creativity to the world of music. In 2010, he collaborated with Christina Aguilera on the cover of the album ‘Bionic’.

Later, in 2016, he created the artwork for Blink-182's album “California”. These collaborations highlight the artist's versatility and his ability to influence different forms of cultural expression. 

D*Face continues to be a central figure in the international street art scene, using his art to provoke reflections on contemporary society and challenge conventions through works that combine pop aesthetics and social criticism.
