Born as Xavier Prou in 1951 in Paris, Blek le Rat is recognized as one of the pioneers of international street art and the father of stencil art. 

His training in architecture and deep interest in art led him to develop a unique artistic language capable of blending classical elements with contemporary urban art.

The Beginning of the Career: From the Discovery of Graffiti to the Innovation of the Stencil

In 1981, inspired by a trip to New York where he had observed the emerging graffiti scene, Blek le Rat began painting on the streets of Paris. 

However, instead of adopting the New York graffiti style, he decided to develop a technique more suited to Parisian architecture: the stencil. This choice allowed him to create detailed images quickly, reducing the risk of being discovered during his nocturnal artistic forays.

The Symbolism of the Rat: Freedom and Art.

Blek le Rat's first chosen subject was the black rat, which began appearing on numerous walls in the French capital. 

The rat, according to the artist, represents the only free animal that lives in every city in the world and is able to survive even in the most adverse conditions, thus becoming a symbol of freedom and resilience. 

In addition, the word “rat” is an anagram of “art”, a language game that emphasizes the connection between the animal and artistic expression.

The Influence on Contemporary Street Art and the Relationship with Banksy

Blek le Rat's innovative approach has had a significant impact on contemporary street art, influencing numerous artists, including the famous Banksy. 

The latter acknowledged the importance of Blek le Rat, stating: 

“Every time I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat did too, only 20 years earlier.” 

Both artists share the use of the stencil and the inclusion of the rat as a recurring subject in their works, a symbol of subversion and freedom.

Social and Political Themes in the Works of Blek le Rat

Blek le Rat's creations are deeply rooted in social and political themes. His works often depict marginalized individuals or iconic figures, aiming to raise awareness of issues such as poverty, social injustice, and individual freedom.

In 2016, he held his first solo exhibition in Italy at the Wunderkammern gallery in Milan, entitled “Propaganda”. These exhibitions testify to the international recognition of his pioneering contribution in the field of street art.

In addition to social issues, Blek le Rat draws inspiration from art history, reinterpreting works by masters such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Leonardo da Vinci through the stencil technique.
