JonOne – Sound of Music, 2023
Made in 2023, Sound of Music is a unique work on paper by French-American artist JonOne, a leading figure in the contemporary art scene with roots in the New York graffiti movement of the 1980s. Born and raised in Harlem, JonOne has been able to transform the urban language of writing into an abstract, gestural art form, taking his practice to an international scale.
In this 71x76 cm work, the artist employs gouache, ink and spray paint to bring to life a layered and vibrant visual composition. The multiple colors chase each other in a fast-paced rhythm, generating a web of marks, spots and gestures that convey energy and freedom. The surface of the paper becomes the scene of a chromatic explosion where there is no precise compositional center: each area of the sheet is traversed by the same intensity, creating a dynamic tension that seems to extend beyond the edges of the work.
Despite its apparent spontaneity, Sound of Music reveals a refined formal construction, matured through years of experimentation. The absence of figuration gives way to a pure visual experience, where each trace tells of the urban identity and creative impulse that have always characterized JonOne's work.
